Heraldry is an ancient form of art going back to the medieval age where supposedly the big weird helmets knights wore could make it difficult to separate your friends from your enemy, so they started putting designs on their shields and outside on top their armour as coats to solve that.Then aristocrats started to use them to represent their families add things around and atop the shield Then specifically, absolutist monarchs decided that since they were the nation personified, the state should share their arms, and then locations started being associated with coats of arms which is basically how it got to how it is today.
This is something I REALLY LIKE, there's so much history and meaning around all the charges and patterns plus it's niche, so I've made my own arms for me, I'd make some for anyone if they asked me (ask me) and idk it's my thing
